Englishman to walk 200km to support education in the Dominican Republic

Santo Domingo.- Education is a fundamental key to a brighter future, but for many children in the Dominican Republic, accessing quality education remains out of reach. In response to this urgent need, Englishman Callum Bates is launching a pioneering initiative to raise both awareness and funds for educational programs aimed at helping underprivileged children.

Bates will embark on a monumental journey known as the “Walk for Education,” covering a 200km route from the Colonial Zone in Santo Domingo to Coco Bongo in Punta Cana. This unprecedented 6-day challenge goes beyond a physical feat; it seeks to make a significant impact on the lives of children who deserve a better future.

“This walk is the biggest challenge I’ve ever undertaken,” Bates said. “Through this effort, I aim to highlight the importance of education and offer hope to those less fortunate. It’s inspiring to see people from various nationalities joining us—Dominicans, Venezuelans, Americans. The more people we have, the better!”

The funds raised will benefit 2nd Mile Missions, a charity that operates Hope Academy in Friusa, Bavaro. The academy provides education to children from all backgrounds, including those whose families cannot afford it. Currently, around 70 children are on the waiting list for Hope Academy, and they will be the primary beneficiaries of the funds raised through the event.

Supporters can contribute in two ways: by making a direct donation or by spreading awareness about the cause. Both actions have the potential to make a transformative difference in the lives of hundreds, if not thousands, of children across the Dominican Republic.

“With the tremendous support of our major sponsors—Coco Bongo, Amstar, Dolphin Discovery, Marinarium Parks and Athlos Gyms—we aim to create a lasting legacy that will benefit future generations,” Bates added.

There are rural schools that are in greater need than Friusa, such as the one in El Buren, Piedra Blanca, which is much more remote in the countryside, or the schools in Peñón del Rey or Cañada Honda.

I have to start somewhere, John! If I could raise money for them all, I would. That’s why I’m raising awareness on behalf of the schools as you’ve mentioned. Let’s see how this goes…

I have to start somewhere, John! I chose this school and charity because I trust them to distribute the donations to the children who need it most. If I could raise money for all the schools you’ve mentioned, I would! Until then, let’s see how this goes and we may be able to help more in future.

I would like to address your ignorance and negativity.

  1. I have personally made sure that 100% of the donations will be going to the children.
  2. The money really will be helping the locals.
  3. What are you personally doing to help local causes?
  4. Come and walk with us in October, then see if you think it’s a joke!
