Dominican Republic sets new record for electricity demand supplied

Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Republic’s National Interconnected Electric System (SENI) achieved a new record for electricity demand on Thursday, supplying 3,860 MW at 9:00 pm, as announced by Minister of Energy and Mines Joel Santos Echavarría via his social media account. The record was made possible by the combined efforts of the thermal generation park and hydroelectric plants, which contributed 450 MW, representing an 8% increase compared to the same period last year.

Minister Santos Echavarría highlighted ongoing efforts by the government and private sector to expand and diversify the country’s energy matrix. Currently, over 2,000 MW of natural gas and 1,025 MW of non-conventional renewable energy projects are under development. Since 2020, the contribution of renewable energy has more than doubled and is projected to double again by 2027, further strengthening the country’s commitment to sustainable energy.

In addition, the minister announced the upcoming launch of a national campaign to promote energy efficiency, aimed at encouraging responsible energy use among citizens. “Together, we can achieve a stronger system for all,” he concluded, emphasizing the shared responsibility in building a resilient energy future.
