PUCMM, Fundación Popular, and UNDP promote sustainable tourism in Northern Dominican Republic
Santiago.- The Alejandro E. Grullón E. Sustainability Chair at PUCMM, together with Fundación Popular and the UNDP, has launched an initiative to foster sustainable, resilient, and inclusive tourism in the northern region of the Dominican Republic.
Through workshops in Santiago, Montecristi, and Puerto Plata, over 80 participants from the tourism sector gained practical tools to implement sustainable practices. The sessions emphasized reducing environmental impact, boosting local economic development, and enhancing competitiveness in a market increasingly focused on sustainability. A highlight was the presentation of the Sustainable Tourism Good Practices Guide, outlining steps such as cutting greenhouse gas emissions, managing resources efficiently, and obtaining sustainability certifications.
Led by sustainable tourism expert Lisette Gil Muñoz, the workshops featured interactive group dynamics and strategy design tailored to participants’ needs. The program concluded with certificates and free access to educational resources, underscoring the collaborative commitment to advancing sustainable tourism and empowering local communities.
