DIGESETT warning to heavy vehicle drivers

Santo Domingo — The General Directorate of Traffic and Land Transport Security (DIGESETT) warned citizens and carriers about the implementation of strict inspection and control measures that have been applied since Friday, January 31, by virtue of the recent ban on the circulation of heavy vehicles on the Malecón of Santo Domingo, dictated by the National Institute of Traffic and Land Transport (INTRANT) and the Mayor’s Office of the National District (ADN).

With the aim of improving road safety and preventing traffic accidents in this important artery of the capital, the DIGESETT will intensify the supervision of the circulation of cargo vehicles of two axles or more in the restricted zone, which includes the entire George Washington Avenue and the 30 de Mayo Highway, from the Port of Santo Domingo to the Luperón Avenue interchange.

The director of the DIGESETT, General Francisco Osoria de la Cruz, P.N., said that the entity will have strategic patrol units and control points, where the permitted routes will be verified, and sanctions will be applied to those carriers that do not comply with the established provisions.

He also added that, for trucks heading to the Port of Santo Domingo, a mandatory route has been assigned that must be respected: John F. Kennedy Avenue – Francisco del Rosario Sánchez Avenue, in accordance with the provisions of the Restricted Access Zone (ZAR) of the National District.

“Only emergency vehicles, public services and telephone are exempt from this restriction. With this initiative, we seek to guarantee a more fluid and safe circulation in the key areas of the capital, safeguarding the integrity of citizens,” said General Osoria.

In the same way, the head of the DIGESETT called on all carriers to respect the provisions and to collaborate with the agents to avoid sanctions and negative contributions to traffic order in the city.

DIGESETT will issue many warnings. But, as always, some truckers will heed them, some truckers will not. The travelling public are literally trapped on the streets because of the distain of order by the truckers and other vehicles. DIGESETT has to bite back.

Friday last it took this poster 1 hr. 25 minutes to travel from the Puente Flotante on the Malecon to Nuñez de Carceres. Heavy trucks obstructing the passage accounted for part of the delay.
