Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Fisheries and Aquaculture Council (CODOPESCA) has seized 259 pounds of illegally processed leatherback sea turtle meat at a seafood export company. The endangered species, disguised as tilapia and salted cod, was being prepared for vacuum packing and commercial sale.
The leatherback sea turtle (Dermochelys coriacea) is protected under Dominican law and international agreements. CODOPESCA, enforcing Law 307-04 and Decree No. 288/12, continues its efforts to combat illegal wildlife trade and safeguard marine biodiversity. The operation was led by CODOPESCA’s Director of Fisheries Resources, Ángel Luis Franco, who emphasized the importance of rigorous inspections and trained personnel in curbing such environmental crimes.
Authorities have reiterated their commitment to enforcing environmental laws and prosecuting those involved in illegal fishing. This seizure underscores the Dominican Republic’s dedication to protecting its wildlife and ensuring sustainable resource management.
