Tropical Storm Melissa could strengthen as it moves slowly

Santo Domingo.- Tropical Storm Melissa remains stationary in the Caribbean Sea, about 460 km southwest of Pedernales, moving slowly at 4 km/h. Meteorologist Jean Suriel indicated the storm could strengthen within 24–48 hours and may move toward Jamaica.

Although Melissa’s movement is limited, its cloud bands are affecting the Dominican Republic, particularly along the southern coast, increasing the risk of heavy rainfall, flash floods, and urban and rural flooding in southern and southwestern regions.

Suriel noted that the storm’s outer bands could bring prolonged rain through Sunday across much of the country. Authorities and relief agencies continue to urge the public to stay alert, avoid rivers and flood-prone areas, and follow official guidance.
