Mayor Carolina Mejía inaugurates Taíno Park dedicated to Santo Domingo 2026 Games
Santo Domingo.- The mayor of the National District, Carolina Mejía, inaugurated the new Taíno Park in Los Cacicazgos on Tuesday, a public space dedicated to the XXV Central American and Caribbean Games, Santo Domingo 2026. The park, transformed from a simple green area, now features an outdoor gym, children’s playground, dog park, walking paths, an amphitheater for cultural events, LED lighting, and a commemorative sculpture honoring José Martí, Máximo Gómez, and Chief Hatuey—symbols of freedom and unity for the Antilles.
Mayor Mejía highlighted the park as a symbol of community pride and collaboration, emphasizing that it “belongs to everyone” and should be preserved collectively. The new facility includes 1,500 square meters of sidewalks, 5,000 square meters of grass, and more than 80 light fixtures. She also noted that under her administration, more than 205 parks and plazas have been completed, enhancing social cohesion, neighborhood safety, and citizens’ well-being.
The ceremony featured remarks from Luis Mejía Oviedo, president of Centro Caribe Sport, who praised the inclusion of 37 native tree species from participating countries; Iván Gatón, who reflected on the historical importance of the Taíno culture; and Arturo Marroquín, general manager of Industrias San Miguel, which donated the park’s exercise equipment. The event was attended by local authorities, community leaders, and Colí, the official mascot of the Santo Domingo 2026 Games, who delighted families and children at the new space.
