French tourist dies while climbing Pico Duarte, Dominican Republic’s highest mountain

Jarabacoa, D.R.- A French tourist died on Wednesday while climbing Pico Duarte, according to local authorities. Preliminary reports indicate the man suffered a suspected cardiac arrest in the Manabao area of Jarabacoa as he made his way to the summit with a group of hikers.
Local guides and rescue teams responded after receiving the alert, but the tourist showed no vital signs. His body was transported for the corresponding procedures and to coordinate its handover to consular authorities.
The identity of the deceased and additional details about the expedition have not yet been released, as authorities continue investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.















This death is tragic.
The trail to Pico Duarte, 3,101m 10, 174ft, from Manabao is long and difficult, about 22 km. It is stressing to travelers who are not in fit shape. Horses and mules are available at extra costs. However, the last section of the trail to the mountain cannot be traveled by the animals, travelers have to ascend on foot. Visitors have to explore with national guides.
