Biggest lake’s waning waters paint a surreal landscape(Update)

Water is receding

Bahoruco, Dominican Rep.- A surreal landscape has left Lago Enriquillo’s receding waters, where thousands of hectares are now under the hypersaline waters of the largest body of water of the Antilles.

It is part of the Jaragua-Bahoruco-Enriquillo Biosphere Reserve, due to its importance for the region’s biodiversity.

Dozens of bird varieties make its waters and riverbanks their habitat, as well as being the most important sanctuary for American crocodiles and endemic iguanas.

“However, since the beginning of the last decade Lago Enriquillo had begun  increasing its volume of water,” Diario Libre reports about the lake which sits at nearly 40 meters below sea level.
