Reports say US Defense Secretary calls for Army Chief’s resignation
Washington, D.C.- U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has requested the resignation of Army Chief of Staff Randy George, asking for his immediate retirement, according to government sources and reports by CBS News.
George, who served as the Army’s top administrative officer, had a military career spanning nearly four decades, including deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan and key roles such as deputy chief of staff and senior military aide to former Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin. His departure comes amid the ongoing war involving Iran, now entering its first month.
The move is part of a broader shake-up of senior military leadership under Donald Trump, who has dismissed or overseen the exit of several top officials, including former Joint Chiefs Chairman Charles Q. Brown Jr. and other high-ranking officers across multiple branches.
While Hegseth maintains that the changes reflect the president’s authority to appoint preferred leadership, Democratic lawmakers have raised concerns about the potential politicization of the traditionally nonpartisan U.S. armed forces.
