Left-wing organizations reject Marco Rubio’s visit to the Dominican Republic

Santo Domingo.- On Monday, representatives of left-wing organizations in the Dominican Republic strongly opposed the upcoming visit of U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, declaring him “persona non grata.” They criticized the visit as an effort to deepen the country’s dependence on the United States in economic, political, cultural, and military spheres.

In a statement at a press conference, the groups accused Rubio of setting directives for the recently inaugurated U.S. President Donald Trump to the Dominican government, led by President Luis Abinader and the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM). They alleged that the PRM administration exhibits “total submission” to U.S. policies, likening it to a colonial government. The organizations also condemned anticipated actions by the Dominican government to support U.S.-led economic blockades against Cuba, Venezuela, Nicaragua, and Mexico—countries that they praised for maintaining sovereignty and opposing U.S. interventionism.

Additionally, the statement criticized the U.S. government for its “hypocritical double standards” and human rights violations, particularly regarding immigration policies. The leftist groups denounced what they described as “massive and abusive” deportations of immigrants who have contributed significantly to U.S. development. The declaration was signed by several organizations, including the Caamañista Movement, Communist Labor Party, Dominican Popular Movement, and others. Rubio’s visit, part of his first international tour as Secretary of State, includes stops in Panama, Costa Rica, El Salvador, and Guatemala to promote Donald Trump’s agenda, focusing on migration restrictions and U.S. interests in the Panama Canal.
