Senator Genao urges UNESCO recognition for La Vega Carnival

La Vega, DR.- Senator Rogelio Genao of La Vega has called on the Dominican Ministry of Foreign Affairs to expedite the process of securing UNESCO recognition for the La Vega Carnival as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Genao emphasized that, through his initiative, Law #19-23 has already granted the five-century-old festival national recognition, and now the next step is to seek international acknowledgment.

Describing the carnival as the oldest in the New World, Genao highlighted its cultural significance and unique traditions, which he believes make it deserving of the UNESCO distinction. He noted that every Sunday for four weeks, over 210 carnival groups—featuring the iconic “diablos cojuelos” in vibrant costumes—draw more than 100,000 visitors to La Vega. The festivities include lively performances in elaborate caves, parades, and a variety of entertainment that showcase the rich heritage of the Dominican Republic.
