Chinese trade expands in the Dominican Republic, offering low prices and employing Haitian labor

Santo Domingo.- Chinese commerce in the Dominican Republic (DR) continues to thrive, offering low prices and a wide variety of products that attract increasing numbers of consumers. Local shoppers, like Laura Molina, appreciate the affordability and convenience of these establishments, which are seen as a popular alternative to higher-priced stores.

However, the growth of Chinese businesses has sparked concerns over labor practices, particularly regarding the 80-20 labor ratio, which mandates the preference for Dominican workers. Many Chinese-owned stores predominantly employ Haitian nationals, who, while finding job opportunities, express dissatisfaction with their low wages. Haitian worker Jean Pierre noted that the pay is insufficient to meet basic needs.

The influence of Chinese commerce also extends to informal sectors, such as recycling. Divers and recyclers, like Esteban López, collect valuable reusable materials discarded by Chinese businesses, which have become an important livelihood source for many. Since the establishment of diplomatic and commercial ties with China in 2018, the country’s presence in the Dominican economy has grown, presenting both opportunities and challenges in the local labor market.

The government needs to intervene and implement stricter regulations on Chinese commerce and businesses. Too much tax evasion.
