Dominican Republic defeats Mexico, advances to round of 16 at Volleyball World Cup

Bangkok.- The Dominican Republic women’s volleyball team, known as the “Queens of the Caribbean,” secured a spot in the round of 16 of the Women’s Volleyball World Cup in Thailand after sweeping Mexico 3-0 on Monday. With this result, the Dominican squad became the first team in Group F to advance, while Mexico dropped to a 0-2 record.
Captain Brayelin Martínez led the attack with 22 points, supported by Yonkaira Peña (11), Gaila González (8), and Jineirys Martínez (6). The Dominicans dominated both in offense and defense, outperforming Mexico in attacks (42-32) and blocks (6-3). Standout performances also came from libero Brenda Castillo on defense and setter Camila de la Rosa with effective play distribution.
After controlling the first two sets with strong runs and maintaining their lead throughout, the Dominicans sealed the match in the third set despite a more competitive effort from Mexico. Coach Marcos Kwiek celebrated the team’s qualification, emphasizing the focus now shifts to fighting for every point in the next round. The squad will rest Tuesday before facing China on Wednesday at 8:30 a.m.
