Lawsuit filed after cancellation of Águilas–Gigantes Series in New York

The cancellation of the baseball series between Águilas Cibaeñas and Gigantes del Cibao, which was scheduled to take place in New York, has triggered a lawsuit of more than US$770,000 against the Dominican Republic Professional Baseball League (Lidom). According to N Digital, the lawsuit was filed by Félix Cabrera, representative of Latin Events, who claims to have paid US$775,000, plus 2% monthly interest, to Lidom, the teams involved, and the National Federation of Professional Baseball Players (Fenapepro).

Cabrera argues that these payments—made between September and October and ranging from US$87,500 to US$150,000—were for commitments tied to the series set for November 7–9 at Citi Field. Latin Events maintains that the event was canceled due to “irresistible and unforeseeable circumstances” that severely affected ticket sales, including increased immigration raids in New York and the scheduling of the Puerto Rico–Dominican Republic All-Star Game at the same venue just one week later. The company considers this competing event, organized by Fenapepro and involving players from Águilas and Gigantes, to be unfair competition and a breach of good faith.

Lidom, however, rejects this claim, asserting that the organizer violated key contractual obligations by canceling the series unilaterally. League president Vitelio Mejía announced that Lidom and the teams will file their own lawsuit seeking to terminate the contract, stating that the agreement clearly outlines the proper use and handling of the funds received.

The dispute adds a new chapter to an already strained relationship between the parties since 2023.
