Dominican Republic projects $50 Million in Mango exports for 2024

Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Republic is set to export 32 million kilograms of mangoes this year, marking a 30% increase from 2023. This surge in exports is expected to generate $50 million in sales for 2024.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Agriculture, about 47% of these mango shipments are destined for European Union markets, 28% for the United States, and 22% for the United Kingdom.

The country produces over 300 varieties of mangoes, with the Keitt variety leading in international demand, comprising 60% of exports. Other popular varieties, such as mingolo, banilejo, and crema de oro, account for 40% of exports, generating over $40 million in revenue and projected to reach $50 million this year.

To sustain and grow this industry, the Ministry emphasized the importance of improving international approvals and certifications for good agricultural practices (GAP), expanding crop areas, mechanizing and modernizing production, maintaining pest controls, preparing for climate change impacts, and monitoring international markets and marketing strategies.

Currently, the Dominican Republic has around 1,900 registered mango producers and over 143,000 planted hectares. There are 22 packing plants for export, six of which have hydrothermal treatment facilities, and 1,333 producers certified to export to the United States and other markets.

From Wednesday to Sunday, the Expo Mango 2024 Fair will take place in Baní, Peravia province, which the authorities regard as the Dominican “mango capital.”
