67 Haitians tried to enter the Dominican Republic in a bus

San Juan – Police apprehend four men who were trying to smuggle 67 Haitian nationals into Dominican territory in a bus.

Police officers from the Western Regional Investigation Sub-Directorate (Dicrim) in San Juan province arrested in flagrante delicto four men who were illegally transporting 67 undocumented Haitian nationals in a bus to the city of Santo Domingo.

They are Óscar Nina Beriguete, 32; Luis Gabriel Ramón Mateo, 31; Juan Carlos Pirón, 46; and Miguel Ángel Florentino Nina, 28.

The preliminary report indicates that the four detainees were caught by the agents when they were traveling on the Sanchez highway, kilometer 1, from San Juan to Santo Domingo, in a yellow Hyundai bus, license plate No. I113663, carrying on board the undocumented Haitians, including eight minors.

The detainees will be handed over to the Public Prosecutor’s Office for the corresponding legal proceedings.

This is nothing uncommon. Buses entering the RD with smuggled Haitians is as familiar as cigarette butts discarded onto sidewalks and streets. It is not unheard large Dominican businesses have been bussing for years right under the eyes of police and military.
