Traffic jams persist on Duarte Highway despite expansion

Santo Domingo.- Despite the Ministry of Public Works and Communications (MPC) opening all 14 lanes at kilometer 9 on the Duarte Highway, extensive traffic jams were reported this Monday morning. Congestion stretched from the entrance to Los Alcarrizos to kilometer 9, causing delays for commuters. Some road users called on authorities to address the traffic chaos.

Minister Deligne Ascención explained that the ongoing expansion and remodeling of the Duarte Highway, from Kilometer 9 in the capital to Santiago and Montecristi, cost 18 billion pesos. The project, which began in May 2022, added four lanes on each side, facilitated by two new bridges. Six central lanes will serve as expressways from Núñez de Cáceres Avenue to Manoguayabo intersection.

Ascención emphasized that the project aims to improve safety and traffic flow. Landscaping and lighting work will follow, transforming green areas into recreational spaces.

All this money and planning is being spent to expand the lanes. How much money and planning is being invested to reduce the number of vehicles clogging the arteries?
