Santiago honors Fefita la Grande as Cultural Ambassador
Santiago, DR.- In a vibrant ceremony infused with traditional Dominican music, the Mayor of Santiago, Ulises Rodríguez, and the Council of Aldermen honored Manuela Josefa Taveras, affectionately known as “Fefita la Grande,” by declaring her the “Cultural Ambassador” of Santiago de los Caballeros. This prestigious title was conferred through resolution number 3394-24, unanimously approved on September 19, acknowledging Fefita’s remarkable contributions to the preservation and promotion of Dominican music over her impressive fifty-year career.
Mayor Rodríguez praised Fefita’s legacy, highlighting her vital role in enhancing Santiago’s cultural identity both nationally and internationally. “Her artistic legacy is an invaluable treasure for our city and our nation,” he stated. In her heartfelt acceptance speech, Fefita expressed profound gratitude, acknowledging the support of Mayor Rodríguez, the councilors, and the Santiago community, who welcomed her in 1982. She also announced her upcoming milestone of celebrating 60 years in the music industry on March 29.
Cholo D’Oleo, President of the Council of Aldermen, emphasized the unanimous decision to honor Fefita, noting her efforts in elevating Dominican culture worldwide. The event featured performances by the Santiago City Council Typical Ensemble, playing several of Fefita’s popular merengues, and was attended by notable figures from the community, underscoring the artist’s significant impact on Dominican music and culture.
