Prosecutor confirms fraudulent contracts in Alexis Medina corruption case

Santo Domingo.- Prosecutor Elizabeth Paredes from the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for the Prosecution of Administrative Corruption (PEPCA) announced that statements from Alexis Medina before the Second Collegiate Court of the National District corroborated the fraudulent acquisition of contracts for hospital equipment through fictitious credit transfers. Paredes emphasized that testimonies from three key witnesses bolstered the Public Prosecutor’s Office’s claims, asserting that the fraud perpetrated by Medina and associated companies has been clearly established.

The first witness, Inocencio Alberto Taveras, provided evidence regarding a fraud involving asphalt deliveries, refuting the authenticity of signatures on delivery slips found during a search of Medina’s offices. Witness Efraín Báez Fajardo revealed that Medina had approached him to purchase part of a 2012 contract, facilitating the acquisition of equipment for multiple hospitals through Domedical Supply SRL. Báez also admitted to paying bribes to several former officials from the Office of Supervising Engineers of State Works (OISOE) at Medina’s direction.

The third witness, Bolívar Ventura, testified that he was directed by Francisco Pagán to grant credit assignments to Medina for supplying asphalt cement. Ventura recounted an instance where Medina asked him to sign altered documents, enabling him to fraudulently claim around 30 million pesos from the Ministry of Finance for asphalt that was never delivered. The hearing in this corruption case, linked to Operation Octopus, has been adjourned until Friday, October 25, at 9:00 a.m.
