Leonel Fernández criticizes PRM government’s management and unmet promises

Santo Domingo.- Former President and Fuerza del Pueblo leader Leonel Fernández strongly criticized the government of the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM), accusing it of being disconnected from the people’s needs. Speaking at his party’s congress closing plenary, Fernández questioned the administration’s lack of achievements, particularly in infrastructure, despite lengthy speeches filled with new promises. He cited the unfulfilled construction of the Ámbar Highway between Santiago and Puerto Plata as an example of repeated but unkept commitments.

Fernández also denounced the 122,000 million peso increase in public payroll and the 25,000 million dollar rise in external debt, arguing that these funds have not resulted in significant public works. He noted that only 2.5% of GDP has been allocated to infrastructure—the lowest in 72 years. Additionally, he highlighted the worsening energy crisis and 35% electricity rate hike, which have burdened Dominican households.

Accusing the PRM of favoring economic elites while neglecting vulnerable sectors, Fernández criticized the manipulation of statistics to create a false sense of well-being. He called on his party’s supporters to “rescue the Dominican people” and restore them to the center of national political action.
