Dominican Republic hosts Caribbean leaders to honor Cocolo contributions
Santo Domingo.- The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MIREX) announced that on the evening of Friday, June 27, foreign ministers and senior officials from several Caribbean nations will arrive in the Dominican Republic to participate in events honoring the contributions of Cocolo immigrants to the nation’s cultural and economic development.
Distinguished guests include OAS Secretary General Albert Ramdin, the Governor General of Antigua and Barbuda Rodney Williams, and foreign ministers E. Paul Chet Greene (Antigua and Barbuda), Denzil Douglas (Saint Kitts and Nevis), and Joseph Andall (Grenada). Other attendees will include officials from Sint Maarten, the British Virgin Islands, and noted Puerto Rican scholars.
As part of the agenda, the delegation will take part in the inauguration of the Los Cocolos Monument in San Pedro de Macorís on Saturday, June 28, recognizing the historical role of Cocolo immigrants in the development of the Dominican sugar industry. On Sunday, June 29, they will attend the launch of the book “Contributions of Los Cocolos to the Dominican National Identity,” which highlights their influence in fields such as culture, economy, sports, and education.
