Government links school shortage to population growth

Santo Domingo.- President Luis Abinader acknowledged that the shortage of school spaces in the Dominican Republic is most acute in provinces experiencing rapid population growth, such as La Altagracia, Greater Santo Domingo, San Cristóbal, and Santiago. He explained that internal migration, largely driven by the expansion of the hotel and productive sectors, is placing significant strain on the current educational infrastructure.

The remarks came after a working meeting with Education Minister Luis Miguel De Camps to review preparations for the 2025–2026 school year, which begins on August 25. Abinader emphasized the need for coordinated efforts, particularly in high-growth areas like La Altagracia, where he is seeking support from the local hotel sector to help manage the overflow of students.

Minister De Camps assured that the Ministry of Education (MINERD) is taking steps to guarantee school access for all children, even in overcrowded areas. He stated that school and district directors have been instructed to enroll every child, and a new digital platform has been launched to pre-register students and help manage capacity.

Yeah, nice way to sugarcoat the issue, Mr. President. Let’s pretend that unchecked illegal Haitian migration hasn’t played a crucial role in the overpopulation of public schools..

Yeah, illegal Haitian population growth. We got at least 3-4 million of them in here. Send them back and problem solved.
