Ministry of Tourism condemns vandalism at Basilica of La Altagracia
La Altagracia.- The Ministry of Tourism (Mitur) has denounced the vandalism of two artworks at the Via Sacra, a historic and religious heritage site located in the Basilica La Altagracia in Higüey. Authorities have activated the relevant agencies to investigate the incident and identify those responsible. The Via Sacra, built by Mitur with private sector contributions, was intended as a cultural and spiritual attraction for both locals and tourists.
The vandalized works, artistic stelae donated by the SID Group, will be repaired at the company’s expense. The attack occurred along the Boulevard of Peregrination, directly in front of the Basilica, just one year after the site’s inauguration. The project, developed by the Executive Committee of Infrastructures of Tourist Zones (CEIZTUR), spans 9,300 square meters and holds significant cultural and religious value. Bishop Jesús Castro Marte of the Diocese of La Altagracia condemned the act, calling it “an unspeakable offense against our faith, culture, and identity.”
