The National Police returns 56 electric scooters seized in Santiago

Santiago, DR— All it took was for electric scooter owners to present a purchase receipt proving ownership of each one, and 56 of these devices were back on the streets after being detained by the National Police during roadblocks.

The electric scooters or bicycles were delivered to their owners by the regional director of the National Police in Santiago, General Juan Bautista Jiménez, with the caveat that they not be driven by minors.

“We’re going to verify the documents; each person will be given their ID card, using a record book; we’re going to keep a record,” the general explained.

He stated that he has already met with the mayor and spoken with the Director General of Internal Revenue (DGII), and is considering calling a meeting to find a possible solution to the issue.

Bautista Jiménez reiterated that they will continue working because, although these scooters are regulated, minors cannot drive vehicles.

At the time of delivery, the police officer emphasized that it’s important for citizens who engage in this type of activity, to support their families, to understand that minors cannot drive a motor vehicle on public roads. While it’s true that it’s electric, it converts into a motorcycle.

“We will continue working, we will continue to prevent minors from riding this type of electric bicycle on public roads ,” he reiterated.

He argued that the law for this type of rolling vehicle should be amended, since a motor vehicle used on public roads must have insurance to cover damages to third parties, and this vehicle does not have such protection.
