Abinader announces record increase in electricity generation
Santo Domingo.- President Luis Abinader announced that electricity generation in the Dominican Republic will increase significantly in the coming months, marking a record expansion for his administration. The plan includes adding 600 megawatts from new projects, including Energía 2000 (420 MW), Energas (120 MW), and the expansion of SIBA Energy (60 MW), in addition to the 400 MW of thermoelectric power and 800 MW of renewable energy already added during his term.
The president emphasized that this expansion aims to provide reliable energy and peace of mind to citizens after recent blackouts, noting that electricity demand recently surpassed 4,000 MW, compared to 2,800 MW in 2020 when he took office. He also highlighted ongoing investments to resolve issues with overloaded transformers, with 60% of these problems already addressed and a record US$400 million investment planned for this year.
Celso Marranzini, president of the Unified Council of Electricity Distribution Companies (CUED), confirmed that the new energy supply will be cheaper than existing sources, with an average cost of 10 cents per kilowatt-hour compared to Punta Catalina’s 12.5 cents, under fixed-price contracts for 15 years.

more money into the electric system. with all the investments over the years the electric is worse now than it was 25 years ago. they need to look at employes at the electric company. from the president to the people working on the lines. i see several times a week 3 trucks and maybe 6 people from ede estee sitting at andres beach enjoying the breeze, some sleeping and some gazing at the water. where are the supervisors for these people. this is just one of many examples of the waste in incompetence of the employees of the company.
While the electric costs are very reasonable, the reliability is just not there. Electricity in LaVega is off literally every day for 2-3 hours at a time. Sometimes multiple times a day. Responsiveness of staff at Edenorte is non-existent at best. Employees at the main office are often rude and promised service is never delivered. Need to seriously consider hiring quality help and paying them accordingly in addition to adoption of backup systems such as nuclear or hydro.
