Former president and historian backs re-recording of Dominican National Anthem
Santo Domingo.- Juan Daniel Balcácer, historian and former president of the Dominican Academy of History, highlighted the enduring significance of the national anthem during the presentation of a new recording at the National Palace. Balcácer traced the anthem’s history from its first performance on August 17, 1883, at the Esperanza Lodge in Santo Domingo, emphasizing that this symbol of national identity—composed by Emilio Prud’Homme with music by José Reyes—remains as unchanging as the national flag and coat of arms.
The event, held on August 16 in the Hall of Caryatids as part of the 162nd Restoration Day commemorations, was led by President Luis Abinader. The National Choir and National Symphony Orchestra, conducted by maestro José Antonio Molina, performed the patriotic hymn.
This re-recording is a historic project under the general direction of Juan Luis Guerra, involving more than 150 musicians, engineers, and artists. The collaborative effort is considered both a cultural and technical milestone, designed to endure over time and strengthen national pride among Dominicans.
