Digesett defends RD$5.6 million whistle purchase

Santo Domingo.- The General Directorate of Traffic Safety and Land Transportation (Digesett) clarified this Thursday that the purchase of 2,894 whistles, along with chains and identification tags, is part of a routine administrative process carried out under transparency standards and in compliance with legal regulations.

In a press release, the agency explained that whistles are considered “essential” tools for traffic officers, as they enable effective audible signals during traffic control, road management, and accident prevention. The acquisition seeks to provide agents with standardized, durable equipment that meets specific technical requirements for functionality in the field.

The announcement comes after public criticism on social media regarding the tender, valued at RD$5.6 million—about RD$1,947 per whistle. Digesett detailed that the equipment is made of stainless steel, with a sound range of 90 to 100 decibels, and includes branded chains and holders. The institution stressed that the published budget does not represent the final cost, since the bidding process remains open and competitive, and assured that the purchase is a normal part of its annual supply program.

A simple search on Amazon, shows that this embarrassing price is subject to scrutiny. Digisett…corrupt on the streets…corrupt in the office.

This purchase asks the question other than the vendor, who is making money on this deal? Was there ever a tender published? It smells !
