“The population cannot be neglected”: COE extends alerts due to active tropical wave

The Emergency Operations Center (COE) extended weather alerts this Saturday due to the impact of an active tropical wave, which will cause heavy rainfall across much of the country.

The director of the COE, Juan Manuel Méndez, warned that “the population cannot be careless” due to the atmospheric conditions forecast for the next few hours.

In that regard, the province of San José de Ocoa remains on red alert, while Monte Plata, La Altagracia, the National District, San Cristóbal, Peravia, La Romana, San Pedro de Macorís, and Santo Domingo remain on yellow alert.

The provinces of Monseñor Nouel, Independencia, Puerto Plata, Santiago Rodríguez, Azua, Duarte, Bahoruco, Santiago, Barahona, Valverde, Montecristi, Dajabón, San Juan, and Pedernales are under green alert.

The agency specified that scattered showers could occur during the morning along the Atlantic coast, the northeast, and the southeast, with showers more isolated along the south coast.

However, around midday, the rains will intensify into locally moderate to heavy downpours, with thunderstorms and gusts of wind, especially in Santo Domingo, Monte Plata, San Pedro de Macorís, La Altagracia, Sánchez Ramírez, Monseñor Nouel, La Vega, San Cristóbal, Duarte, northern Azua, southern Santiago, Santiago Rodríguez, Dajabón, Valverde, Montecristi, Independencia, and Elías Piña, among other nearby provinces.

According to the agency, these conditions are due to the combination of a trough and the approach of a tropical wave.
