Investigation launched into death of Dominican baseball prospect and alleged abuse in academies

Santo Domingo.- The National Baseball Commissioner of the Dominican Republic, Junior Noboa, alongside Judge Olga Diná Llaverías of the National Directorate of Children, Adolescents, and Family (Dinnaf), has initiated an investigation into the death of 14-year-old baseball prospect Ismael Ureña Pérez. Noboa announced a thorough inquiry to determine the circumstances surrounding Ureña’s tragic death, reportedly linked to violations of the Health Law 42-01 regarding pharmaceuticals and provisions of the Dominican Penal Code. The probe also includes allegations of abuse and exploitation of minors in baseball academies. Noboa emphasized that the investigation, supported by President Luis Abinader, seeks justice for Ureña and aims to address broader concerns of doping and abuse in youth sports.

Ismael Ureña’s death has exposed alarming practices within youth baseball training. The teenager, who trained at the Yordy Cabrera Baseball Academy, reportedly left home to pursue his dream of joining Major League Baseball. However, his health deteriorated after being allegedly injected with a substance designed for horses, resulting in severe symptoms like jaundice, bloody urine, and paralysis. Despite being hospitalized, Ureña passed away days later. His mother confirmed the doping incident, and his brothers, who trained at the same academy, now suffer from health complications, including vision impairment and tachycardia.

The investigation extends beyond Ureña’s case to include reports of physical and psychological abuse at another academy in Boca Chica. Noboa affirmed that those responsible for such violations would face justice, reiterating his commitment to ensuring a safe and ethical environment for young athletes. Ureña’s father, in an emotional plea for accountability, highlighted the need for systemic changes to prevent similar tragedies.
