Chamber of Deputies approves bill to protect Dominican baseball prospects
Santo Domingo.- The Chamber of Deputies has approved, in its first reading, a bill regulating the hiring of baseball prospects in the Dominican Summer League (DSL), part of Major League Baseball (MLB). This initiative aims to ensure the legal stability and sustainable growth of Dominican baseball, a cornerstone industry for the country.
The Dominican Republic is a key talent hub for MLB, hosting academies for all 30 teams and signing over 500 young players annually. However, the system faces challenges from over 1,000 labor lawsuits, raising concerns about the industry’s stability. The bill redefines the relationship between players and teams as a “special sporting relationship” rather than a labor one, addressing these legal threats. It also mandates arbitration for conflict resolution and requires MLB teams to provide housing, food, and training for players.
A complementary bill is in progress to regulate pre-signing conditions for prospects. Together, these legislative measures aim to protect the Dominican baseball industry and nurture future stars like Juan Soto and Fernando Tatis Jr., ensuring the country’s continued prominence in global baseball.
Protect the players from themselves and bloodsuckers.
