New York.- Toronto Blue Jays star Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has agreed to a massive 14-year, US$500 million contract extension that begins in 2026, a person familiar with the deal told the Associated Press. The agreement, which does not include deferred payments, removes one of the biggest names from next offseason’s free-agent market.
Guerrero, a four-time All-Star and the son of Hall of Famer Vladimir Guerrero, previously signed a one-year, US$28.5 million deal in January to avoid arbitration. Though he had said he wouldn’t negotiate after spring training started, talks with his agent continued into the regular season. At 26, Guerrero was poised to be a free agent this fall.
The new deal is the third-largest in MLB history in total value, trailing only Juan Soto’s US$765 million contract with the Mets and Shohei Ohtani’s US$700 million deal with the Dodgers. Guerrero’s average annual value of US$35.71 million ranks eighth among active contracts.
Guerrero has a career batting average of .277 with 160 home runs and 511 RBIs. So far this season, he’s hitting .256 with four RBIs over 10 games. The Blue Jays, still chasing their first World Series since 1993, have also made key signings including Anthony Santander, Max Scherzer, and Jeff Hoffman. However, fellow star Bo Bichette remains a pending free agent after the 2025 season.
He has a .287 career batting average.. c’mon now, publish correct statistics and put some respect on the man.
