New York.- The New York Mets announced the promotion of Dominican coach Gilbert Gómez as their new first base and outfield coach for the upcoming MLB season, recognizing his leadership, communication with young players, and modern coaching approach. Gómez, originally signed by the Mets in 2009, ended his playing career at 25 to fully dedicate himself to coaching.
He quickly advanced through the Mets’ development system, serving as hitting coach, bench coach, and later manager. In 2025, he led the Brooklyn Cyclones to a historic season, achieving a franchise-record 72 wins and an undefeated postseason to secure the South Atlantic League title. He also managed MLB’s Breakout Game and was appointed assistant manager to Albert Pujols for the next World Baseball Classic, after helping the Dominican Republic win bronze at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
In the Dominican winter league, Gómez has held multiple roles with the Tigres del Licey and became the youngest manager in LIDOM history to win a championship during the 2023–24 season. His rise places him among only seven Dominican managers to win a title in their debut year.
