Arajet boosts air traffic between Mexico and the Dominican Republic by over 180%

Santo Domingo.- Since Arajet began operations between Mexico and the Dominican Republic in September 2022, air traffic between the two countries has grown significantly. According to data from the Dominican Ministry of Tourism, the arrival of Mexican tourists increased by 260% from 2021 to 2024 and by 133% compared to 2019. Tourist arrivals rose from 31,907 in 2021 to 115,902 in 2024, while outbound flights grew over 180%, from 416 in 2021 to 1,190 in 2024.

While Arajet played a key role, the entire air market between both nations expanded. In 2024, 33.2% of Mexican tourists traveled via Arajet, 29.6% with Copa Airlines, and 26.8% with Aeroméxico. Arajet’s CEO, Víctor Pacheco, termed this phenomenon the “Arajet effect”, noting that competition has lowered prices and increased overall passenger traffic, benefiting travelers and economies alike.

The Central Bank of the Dominican Republic reports that 67.9% of Mexican visitors come for tourism, 18.6% for business, and 9.9% to visit family or friends. The rise in tourism also boosted trade between the two nations, with imports increasing by 7.8% and exports by 23.83%. Popular attractions for Mexican tourists include Saona Island, colonial city tours, ziplining, snorkeling, and theme parks.
