UN extends Haiti mission
The United Nations Security Council unanimously approved on Monday the extension of the mandate for the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH) until January 31, 2026. The resolution, introduced by the United States and Panama, aims to support Haiti’s Transitional Presidential Council in restoring state institutions ahead of the general elections scheduled for February 2026.
The decision comes amid escalating violence in Haiti, where BINUH recently reported a 24% rise in homicides—totaling 4,026 in the first half of 2025—and a staggering 1.3 million people displaced by gang violence. This marks a threefold increase compared to 2023, highlighting the country’s deepening security and humanitarian crisis.
