Caribbean Queens fall to Brazil in Paris 2024 quarterfinals

Paris.- The Dominican Republic’s Caribbean Queens suffered a decisive 3-0 defeat to Brazil in the quarterfinals of women’s volleyball at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. The match, held at the Paris Arena South 1, ended with scores of 25-22, 25-13, and 25-17 in favor of Brazil, one of the tournament favorites.

The Dominicans were unable to replicate their Santiago 2023 Pan American Games performance, where they had previously defeated Brazil to reach the same playoff stage as in London 2012 and Tokyo 2020. In their Olympic debut in Athens 2004, the Dominican women’s team did not advance past the first round.

Brazil, undefeated in their four matches in Paris, demonstrated their dominance from the outset with strong defense and effective attacking play. Gabriela Braga Guimaraes led Brazil with 20 points, including 3 from blocks. Ana Menezes contributed 14 points, and Rosamaria Montibeller added 11. Yonkaira Peña was the only Dominican to reach double digits, scoring 12 points.

After winning gold in Beijing 2008 and London 2012, Brazilian women’s volleyball is aiming to reclaim the top spot after securing silver in Tokyo 2020, where they lost to the United States in the final.
