Leonel Fernández denies allegations of supporting Maduro regime in Venezuela

Santo Domingo.- Former President of the Republic and leader of the opposition party Fuerza del Pueblo (FP), Leonel Fernández, responded on Monday to recent statements by President Luis Abinader, who accused him of supporting the Nicolás Maduro regime in Venezuela.

In a statement to the press, Fernández firmly denied any support for the Venezuelan government following the controversial elections of July 28. He emphasized that his role in those elections was strictly impartial, serving as an international observer.

Fernández also noted that he now understands the media campaign orchestrated against him by the ruling Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM), which, he believes, stems from his involvement as an observer not only in these elections but also in the 2015 elections, where the Venezuelan opposition secured a majority in Parliament.

“Firstly, it is untrue that I have criticized your stance on Venezuela. My participation in the July 28 presidential elections in Venezuela was solely as an international observer, as I have done on previous occasions in various Latin American countries. During this mission, I had the opportunity to meet with the presidential candidates, including two meetings with the main opposition candidate, Edmundo González,” Fernández stated.
