Santo Domingo.- The driver responsible for the tragic truck accident in the Bastida community of Azua, which resulted in over 10 fatalities and nearly 30 injuries, has surrendered to authorities.
The driver, identified as Ángel Encarnación Bautista, also known as “Papito,” hails from Hondo Valle in the province of Elías Piña. He was accompanied by Yamailin Santana, who also turned herself in to the police.
Police spokesman Diego Pesqueira reported that among the deceased was a National Police sergeant. Several victims remain unidentified. Most of the injured were transported to the San Juan de la Maguana hospital, according to Azua’s provincial health director, Joel Montaño.
This is a tragic accident that should it never had happen. Why, were all of those people in the middle of the road at those hours in the morning.
Why? Because… taking responsibility for one’s own safety in the RD is unusual. Crowding into a street is risky, but normal. Let the other guy take responsibility for your safety… it is not up to you. We all observe the tragic results of this culture.
