Dominican Republic allocates US$1,560 Million for Independence Day celebrations abroad

Santo Domingo.- According to N Digital, the Vice Ministry of Bilateral Foreign Policy has set a budget cap of US$30,000 (approximately RD$1,850,700) for each of the Dominican Republic’s 52 diplomatic missions to host Independence Day events. While costs vary by country, representatives indicate that typical expenses range from $3,500 to $5,000 per celebration. These events aim to commemorate Dominican Independence Day on February 27 and strengthen connections with Dominican communities and international representatives.

The memorandum approving the budget was signed by José Julio Gómez, then Vice Minister of Bilateral Foreign Policy, just days before his appointment as ambassador to China. His new role, formalized by Decree 669-24, began on January 17, 2025, marking a significant milestone in his diplomatic career.

The total allocation for these celebrations amounts to US$1,560 million (RD$96,236,400). The funding covers activities such as religious services, formal dinners, and luncheons, often held in hotels and attended by Dominican residents and foreign diplomats. These events not only honor the nation’s history but also serve as platforms for strengthening international ties.
