Morrison highlights President Abinader’s road safety commitment in Morocco
Marocco.- Milton Morrison, executive director of the National Institute of Transit and Land Transport (Intrant), emphasized the Dominican government’s commitment to improving road safety and reducing traffic accidents. Speaking at the IV Ministerial Conference on Road Safety in Morocco, he highlighted the country’s high accident rate, with 3,114 traffic-related deaths in 2024—65.5% involving motorcycles. To address this, the government signed the National Pact for Road Safety, uniting 121 entities to implement stricter measures. Morrison also introduced the “Guardianes del Tránsito” volunteer program to engage young people, who represent 55% of road fatalities, in road safety initiatives.
Morrison participated in key discussions at the conference, including panels on motorcycle safety, sustainable mobility, and youth involvement in policy-making. He underscored the Dominican Republic’s efforts to increase helmet use and enforce traffic laws while promoting collaborations with the private sector to raise awareness. The government also aims to reduce the country’s global ranking as one of the most dangerous for road safety through its National Road Safety Plan 2025-2030.
In addition to conference discussions, Morrison held bilateral meetings with international road safety leaders and organizations, including the United Nations, Spain’s Directorate of Traffic, and the Ibero-American Federation for Assistance to Victims of Road Violence. He announced the creation of a unit within Intrant dedicated to supporting accident victims and their families, with technical assistance from international organizations. The Dominican delegation also endorsed the Marrakech Declaration, committing to global efforts to reduce traffic fatalities by 2030.

Commitment is a weak word. Enforcement is a stronger word. Both words are vacant from Dominican safety actions.
