Santo Domingo.- President Luis Abinader defended recent improvements in the purchasing power of Dominicans during his weekly press conference, La Semanal. He highlighted the “Pollo Index” as a benchmark to measure how much chicken workers can buy with the minimum wage, contrasting it with earlier data.
Abinader recalled introducing the “Plátano Index” in 2023 amid debates over plantain prices and challenged political opponents to compare the figures themselves. He explained that while prices fluctuate annually, the key focus should be on how much the minimum wage can buy. According to his calculations, in 2012, the minimum wage could purchase 113 pounds of chicken, while in 2024 it can buy 232 pounds, demonstrating increased purchasing power.
