Transport unions would strike if government doesn’t lower prices

Santo Domingo.- A group of passenger transport unions on Monday threatened to stage a general strike if the Government fails to solve the problems they say affect their sector and the truckers within 15 days.

They said Dominicans won’t put up with further increases any longer, so they demand that the authorities lower the prices of fuel, and spares and food staples.

Blas Peralta, head of the union of truck owners grouped in Fenatrado, said however that there’ll be no surprise strikes or higher fares, and that their protests will not jeopardize the population.

He said although the Government has created a commission which seeks a solution to the transport sector, the drivers have yet to be called on.

Also present in the press conference headed by Peralta were the heads of bus unions Juan Hubieres, Antonio Marte and Ramon Perez Figuereo, and Oscar Almanzar, of the motorbike-taxi drivers.
