This is how associations and parties reacted to the withdrawal of the tax reform

Santo Domingo—After President Luis Abinader announced that he would withdraw the bill to transform the tax system from the National Congress, several sectors expressed their opinions on the matter.

One of the first to express its opinion on the Government’s decision was the Dominican Association of Cinema Professionals (Adocine), which, in a press release, expressed optimism that the President had withdrawn the proposal, which included repealing Film Law 108-10.

Hans García, president of Adocine, expressed his support for the president’s action, pointing out that” to err is human and to rectify is for the brave.” García emphasized that had the reform been carried out, it would have threatened a cultural and creative industry that generates essential benefits for the country. “We have always been and will always be open to dialogue. We understand that the country needs a comprehensive reform. We are not opposed to it; however, we believe it is necessary to sit at the dialogue table and reach agreements that not only preserve our industry but also strengthen it and contribute to the country’s development,” García stressed.

For its part, the Fuerza del Pueblo (FP) party welcomed the decision. It recalled that it was a measure requested by the former president and leader of the organization, Leonel Fernández.

In a statement issued tonight, the PF said: “We welcome the fact that the President of the Republic ordered the withdrawal of the fiscal reform bill submitted to the National Congress, which did not have the necessary consensus at the national level.”

The party pointed out that the reform proposal, described by the opposition leader as a”“fiscal bombshell”” would have negatively impacted the national economy. In view of the widespread rejection of Dominican society, Leonel Fernández asked President Abinader to reconsider his position and withdraw the reform, thus opening the possibility of a broad and constructive debate that would allow a consensus to be reached.

This action reflects a thoughtful and responsible stance towards the country’s economic development. From Codopyme, we understand that fiscal modernization is necessary for our growth as a nation,” he said in a statement.

They stressed that they firmly believe that any reform must promote progress without harming the productive sectors that are essential for the country’s economic well-being.

I still believe a reform needs to be implemented, just a better one.
