Customs seize millions of smuggled cigarettes and ammunition

Santo Domingo.- Officials from the General Directorate of Customs (DGA) uncovered a large contraband operation at the Haina port, seizing approximately 3,020,000 cigarettes hidden in an import container. The falsely declared shipment, which listed “various effects, household items, and PPE” as its contents, was attempting to evade RD$16,698,082 in taxes owed to the Dominican government.

In addition to the cigarettes, officers also discovered 6,027 units of ammunition in various calibers, further raising concerns about the nature of the shipment. The container, originating from Brooklyn, New York, is now under investigation.

The DGA emphasized its commitment to combating customs violations and ensuring compliance with Customs Law No. 168-21. The authorities assured that once the investigation is complete, the case will be presented to the judicial authorities. This seizure highlights the DGA’s ongoing efforts to fight smuggling, particularly during the holiday season, to protect legal trade and public safety.
