Public Health confirms two new rabies cases from ferret bites

Santiago de los Caballeros.- The Ministry of Public Health has confirmed two new cases of rabies in the municipal districts of Las Placetas (San José de las Matas) and La Canela (Santiago), both caused by ferret bites. The affected individuals are under medical supervision and are not in life-threatening condition.
One of the incidents occurred in Las Placetas, where a ferret attacked a person sitting in an amusement park. The animal was later captured in a dining area and tested positive for rabies in Santo Domingo. Authorities warn that rabid ferrets can spread the virus to humans and animals, including dogs. A separate case involving a dog bite is currently under investigation.
Public Health has activated control and monitoring measures in the affected areas and is working with local authorities to inform residents and prevent further spread. The population is urged to remain vigilant and report any unusual animal behavior.
