Violent military operation sparks outrage in Arroyo Vuelta over Barrick Gold machinery

Sánchez Ramírez, Cotuí.- In the early hours of last Wednesday, the Dominican Army carried out a forceful operation in Arroyo Vuelta to facilitate the entry of machinery for the mining company Barrick Gold. Residents described the intervention as excessive, citing the use of pellet bullets and tear gas, which caused chaos and fear in the community.

The operation left eight people injured, including Isidro Coronado, who required foot surgery, and Jhonny Durán, a representative of the Dominican Episcopal Conference, who sustained a facial injury. Three women, Apolonia Jiménez, Julia Mendoza, and Yolanda Fabián, were reportedly dragged by military personnel, raising allegations of gender violence. Additionally, community member Geraldo Cuevas was detained without explanation, further escalating tensions.

Residents have condemned the use of military force, citing unresolved grievances such as unpaid compensation for damaged properties, lack of dignified resettlement, and inadequate toxic waste management. Children were also affected, with reports of asphyxiation from tear gas. The incident has intensified criticism of the government’s prioritization of corporate interests over citizens’ rights and regional stability.

The backdrop to this is Barrick is constructing a tailings dam with heavy machinery on lands occupied by residents. The dispute arrives from the residents complaining they are not being treated right, not being compensated properly to move away. They, the residents, say the military supporting Barrick is being heavy-handed towards them as evidenced by the use of pellet bullets and tear gas.
