Abinader: protests allowed, but without disorder

Santo Domingo.- President Luis Abinader affirmed that his government will not tolerate disorder while guaranteeing the right to peaceful and orderly protests. Speaking at his weekly press conference at the National Palace, Abinader stated, “This government allows demonstrations, but in order and peace.”

His remarks followed a march organized by the Ancient Dominican Order in Hoyo de Friusa, Punta Cana, to protest the “massive” presence of illegal Haitians in the area. Clashes erupted when some demonstrators allegedly breached agreed boundaries, prompting police to intervene with tear gas and water cannons. Authorities reported 32 arrests and the seizure of several weapons.

The government reiterated that while peaceful protests are a constitutional right, they must adhere to legal frameworks and prior agreements to ensure public safety. Opposition groups condemned the police response, accusing them of excessive force.
