Bisonó: Haiti’s trade restrictions won’t impact Dominican industry

Santo Domingo.- Dominican Minister of Industry, Commerce, and MSMEs, Víctor Ito Bisonó, stated that recent restrictions imposed by Haiti on foreign goods crossing its borders will not significantly affect the Dominican Republic’s industrial sector. He explained that Haiti’s decision stems from internal logistics and security challenges, rather than a bilateral conflict.

Bisonó emphasized that Dominican exports, including industrial and agricultural products, have a strong foothold in other Caribbean markets and are not solely reliant on Haiti. He noted that these exports continue on schedule and remain exempt from customs duties, minimizing any potential economic impact.

Although the minister acknowledged that the restrictions could temporarily affect transport workers along the border, he reiterated that national production remains stable. He also advocated for the creation of “dry ports” to strengthen logistics, a proposal that has been under discussion since his tenure in Congress.
