Senator Cholitín withdraws controversial hate speech bill amid public backlash
Santo Domingo.- Senator Rafael “Cholitín” Barón Duluc of La Altagracia province announced the withdrawal of his proposed Hate Speech bill from the National Congress. In a public statement, he cited the need to reflect on widespread public concern and ensure that freedom of expression is not compromised. The bill aimed to regulate hate speech on digital platforms to promote social harmony but faced criticism for potentially threatening free speech.
Cholitín emphasized that the initiative was driven by a genuine concern over the rise of harmful, anonymous online discourse and its impact on human dignity. However, acknowledging the lack of consensus, he stressed the importance of a more inclusive and thoughtful legislative process.
He invited legal experts, journalists, students, and civil society to continue the conversation on creating a legal framework that balances freedom with respect. He concluded by thanking the public for their engagement and reaffirmed that good governance involves listening and responding to the people.

Who defines what is “hate speech”? If someone writes something that offends you, say “what an ass!” and move on. Toughen up a little, folks!
