Water service limited in Santo Domingo
Santo Domingo.- The Santo Domingo Water and Sewer Corporation (CAASD) announced a reduction in water service for several areas in the National District and Santo Domingo Oeste. This is due to a significant drop—over 11 million gallons per day—in water production, caused by falling water levels at the Valdesia and Jigüey dams.
Despite recent scattered rainfall, the ongoing dry season has not provided enough precipitation to replenish the reservoirs. Experts from CAASD and INDRHI state that only the heavy rains typical of hurricane season can restore dam levels, requiring inflows of 100 to 200 cubic meters per second.
Currently, the Valdesia dam has dropped from level 150 to 141.83, and Jigüey is at 525.50—both showing substantial declines.
Affected Areas Include:
-
Independence Avenue (various kilometers)
-
Upper Cayetano Germosén Avenue (between Luperón and Italia)
-
Ensanche La Paz
-
Mata Hambre
-
Several zones in Santo Domingo Oeste

What is the government doing to conserve its water resources? How many dams, reservoirs, and public wells are in the planning phase? How much is being done to create and sustain existing watersheds? What is being done to seal leaks in the water distribution networks? How come government has not enacted laws to force new and remodeled commercial and residencial building projects install water conserving plumbing only?
